Two of the stars of hit comedy-drama series Love, Victor have emphasised the importance of having open conversations with young people about sex as season 2 launches on Star on Disney Plus.
Love, Victor, a sequel series to the 2018 film Love, Simon, stars Michael Cimino as Victor, a teenager on a journey of self-discovery as he figures out his sexual orientation while settling into a new school at the same time.
Season one, which premiered in 2020, ended with Victor coming out as gay to his parents and his sister, leaving fans desperate to find out what happened next in his story.
Among the various topics that Love, Victor explores, season two shines a spotlight on breaking down the taboo of talking to young people about sex, an aspect of the show that stars Bebe Wood and Anthony Turpel told Metro.co.uk they believe strongly in.
Anthony, who plays Victor’s neighbour and close friend Felix, expressed his belief that ‘those discussions need to be had’.
‘People being comfortable with sex is I think a huge plus because I think you should know how to wear protection, from everything else, any question. No one should be going in scared or confused,’ the 21-year-old said.
‘So I think it really does help opening up that dialogue that I think a lot of people aren’t having.’
Bebe, who plays Lake in the programme, echoed sentiments her co-star and on-screen romantic interest.
‘Sex shouldn’t be taboo and making it seem that way obviously leads to I think a lot of teenagers feeling uncomfortable in their bodies when they definitely shouldn’t feel that way,’ the 19-year-old remarked.
‘I think seeing them on screen, like Anthony said, will totally open up conversations that should be had.’
Another conversation sparked from Anthony’s performance as Felix is raising awareness of young carers, as Felix is depicted caring for his mother as they experience financial struggles.
Anthony said that he hadn’t ‘really seen this storyline done a lot’, adding that it’s ‘something that needs to be addressed, because this is something that people have to live with’.
The actor explained that viewers could use Felix’s story as a way ‘to say “that’s what’s going on in my life right now”’, expressing his hope that the character’s arc has ‘a good impact on those people’.
In season one of Love, Victor, viewers learn that Lake struggles with body insecurities, a struggle that she continues to face in season two.
Bebe said that she thinks it’s ‘wonderful’ for body image issues to be highlighted on the show, as it can be ‘really easy to feel isolated and alone when you’re feeling those things’.
‘There are so many things thanks to social media that we can look at and compare ourselves to and so representation matters,’ she said.
‘Being able to see yourself or a version of what you may be going through personally is wonderfully helpful, because as I said, those experiences can feel so isolating and to see that and to know that you’re not alone is really helpful.’
Love, Victor season two is streaming on Star on Disney Plus from Friday June 18.
