Matthew Wolff Creates Unique U.S. Open Scoring Record at Torrey Pines

Matthew Wolff has returned to professional golf after a gap of two months. The American golfer last played at Masters in April 2021. He had stayed away from the game to focus on his mental health. After this long break, he made an emphatic comeback in the first round of the U.S. Open 2021.

What record did Matthew Wolff create in the U.S. Open 2021?

Wolff has straight away set the tournament on fire by equalling a few records. He had a roller-coaster of a first-round with eight birdies, two double bogeys, and three bogeys and has made a unique record. There have been over 15,000 U.S. Open rounds played over the last 40 years. And only one has had 8+ birdies and multiple double bogeys or worse; that is Matthew Wolff.

The 22-year-old golfer started brilliantly with four birdies in the first five holes and then scored eight birdies in total. He even equaled a record for most birdies (8) in the opening round of the U.S. Open with Mike Bethpage. Wolff shared his conversation with the caddie he had on the 12th hole in the post-round press conference.

“Yeah, the hot start was obviously great. I mean, I wasn’t expecting it. It’s my first tournament back and it’s the hardest tournament that golf provides us. So it was really nice to start the way I did. I turned to my caddie after I birdied the par-5 13th, and I was like, Dude, I’m 3-under right now. And he’s like, I know. And I just didn’t even realize it.”

But as things were going well, he suddenly lost his plot in the final four holes, where he scored a double bogey, bogey, and a birdie to finish his 18 holes. He gave his opinion about the same by saying,

“I started to fall back a little bit, but that’s kind of when I realized like all right, well, I fell back a little bit and things weren’t always going good, but I’m still enjoying myself and having fun and being happy and in my opinion right now that’s kind of what I’m working on and the most important thing for me regardless of how it goes out there. I just want to make sure that I’m enjoying myself and enjoying my time out here because it’s awesome to be out there.”
