Martin Compston might have his English accent nailed to play Steve Arnott in Line of Duty but today, of all the days, he was not going to even give fans a taster of it.

The 37-year-old appeared on Heart FM Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Lucy Horbin today where he revealed he’s cancelled plans to come to Wembley Stadium to watch England and Scotland Euro 2020 match.

Scottish-born Martin, naturally, has pledged his allegiance to the Tartan Army but admitted there’s a chance he’d do ‘something daft’ if Scotland win.

‘I’m actually going to be watching it at home, I was planning to come down, but I’ve got a theory, that if you don’t want to do something daft, don’t put yourself in a situation to do something daft,’ he said.

‘If we win, I’d be on that pitch and I’d be hugging every Scots person in London so just for the current climate it’s probably best I keep my powder dry for now.’

When Jamie asked if he could hear just a split second of Arnott’s cockney twang, Martin wasn’t having any of it.

‘Jamie, of all the days, this is not the day I’m doing an English accent,’ he laughed, but the presenter just kept pushing.

Martin eventually caved, if only for a brief second to say: ‘No, I’m not doing it, no, no…’ but it wasn’t enough.

‘Can you just say “come on England”?’ Jamie continued.

Martin gasped: ‘Not a chance! Not a chance. Of all the days man.

‘You’re a top guy, usually mate I’d be more willing, but no this is…’

Tonight, England will hoping to win their second match of Euros 2020 while Scotland will be hoping for their first after losing to Czech Republic 2-0.

Tune in to Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden weekdays from 06:30 – 10:00.
