A This Morning guest left viewers utterly baffled as she revealed that she unknowingly cremated someone else’s cat when hers went missing… with Dermot O’Leary describing the return of her pet as a ‘lovely story’.

On Friday’s edition of This Morning, Rachel, from Warrington in Cheshire, appeared on the show via video chat to tell Dermot and co-host Alison Hammond about her unusual story.

Rachel explained that her cat Frankie had gone missing when she heard word of a cat who had died on the side of the motorway.

From the description of the cat – who had been decapitated – Rachel thought it sounded like her lost pet, adding that they were unable to check the deceased animal for a microchip.

‘It all added up – the timings, the proximity to the house,’ she said.

After googling ‘how to bury a cat’, Rachel said she thought that cremation was the ‘nicest thing to do for him’… but then three weeks and one day later, the real Frankie returned.

Dermot remarked that there was a ‘happy ending’ to the tale, describing it as a ‘lovely story’ as Rachel stroked her cat while he was sitting on her lap.

However, several This Morning viewers were bewildered as they pointed out that someone else who’s cat might have gone missing likely has no idea that their pet has cremated.

‘So basically they cremated someone else’s cat? And that’s a good thing? And they made a segment out it? WTF. There’s a poor family out there who have lost their cat #ThisMorning,’ one person wrote.

‘It’s not a lovely story for the dead cat #ThisMorning,’ someone else tweeted.

Another viewer stated that ‘if anyone is watching #thismorning and lives next to the m56 – sorry to say your cat is dead’.

Someone else remarked on Dermot’s comments on the story, writing: ‘#ThisMorning Cat got decapitated. Dermot: “It’s a lovely story”.’

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes will be returning to This Morning for a seven-week stint after being dropped from their Friday timeslot.

Back in 2020 it was confirmed Ruth and Eamonn would be replaced by Alison and Dermot on Fridays, although they would continue to cover for Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield during the school holidays.

Nonetheless, in July the couple will be back on the show for seven weeks straight, with Ruth telling OK! magazine: ‘We’ll be doing seven weeks from July. I’m looking forward to it.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
