Brendan Fraser makes rare public appearance at No Sudden Move premiere ahead of The Whale role
Actor Brendan Fraser has been snapped making a rare public appearance as he joined his co-stars at the No Sudden Move premiere.
The 52-year-old actor walked the blue carpet at the event, held during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, joining castmates David Harbour and Jon Hamm at the screening.
Brendan plays Jones in the Steven Soderbergh directed flick, part of a group of criminals in 1954 who are brought together under mysterious circumstances and have to work together to uncover what’s really going on when their simple job goes completely sideways.
The performer also has another gig with a prestigious director lined up as he is set to star in Darren Aronofsky’s father/daughter dramedy The Whale, playing 600lb recluse Charlie, who is looking to re-connect with his daughter after his coming out led to their estrangement.
The project is based on a 2012 Off-Broadway play of the same name, written by award-winning playwright Samuel D Hunter, who is also adapting his work for the big screen.
In The Whale, Charlie grapples with a compulsive eating disorder brought on by grieving for the death of his partner.
Brendan was dressed dapperly for the event, in a dark suit, light blue shirt and patterned tie with co-ordinating pocket square.
He also wore a pair of smart patent leather shoes and smiled for the camera.
The actor experienced a steep ascent to Hollywood stardom in the late 90s and early 2000s, thanks to his leading role in 1997’s George of the Jungle and the part of the derring-do Rick O’Connell in The Mummy franchise.
However, Brendan had taken a step back from the spotlight in the past decade as he struggled with the toll doing his own stunts had placed on his body, saying he was ‘building an exoskeleton for myself daily’ by the time he was filming 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Spending ‘seven years in and out of hospital’, the actor clocked up surgeries including a partial knee replacement, vocal cord repair work and a lumbar laminectomy.
In recent years, Brendan has popped up in many high-quality projects, including TV series The Affair and Trust, as well as Professionals and DC series Doom Patrol.
Pairing up for The Whale with Darren Aronofsky, who earned an Oscar nomination in 2011 for Black Swan as best director, has Brendan’s fans excited for the possibility of awards season glory for him, although his casting sparked accusations of fatphobia when it was announced earlier this year.
Brendan has always mixed his blockbusters with more unexpected fare on his CV, including Gods and Monsters, The Quiet American and Gimme Shelter.
