‘I Wasn’t Prepared’- Tyron Woodley Reveals How Loss to Kamaru Usman Fu**ed Him Up
Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley spoke to Brendan Schaub on an appearance of ‘Food Truck Diaries’. Woodley ran through a gauntlet of topics including his upcoming boxing match against Jake Paul which comes in as his debut in the sport. Furthermore, Woodley looked back at his career in the UFC that came to an end at UFC 260.
Woodley was riding a four-fight losing skid at the time of his departure from the UFC and fans more or less expected it. His fall from grace was quite surprising considering that he was the undisputed champion until March 2019. Many fans point to his loss to Kamaru Usman as the turning point of his career trajectory.
Tyron Woodley: The point on no return
‘The Chosen One’ commented on how his fight against Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 was the beginning of the end. Moreover, he candidly told Schaub that he wasn’t ready for all that was to follow after being dominated by ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ for five rounds. Not to mention, he also went in on the inclination he got in the lead-up to his scrap.
“The promotion in the build-up to my fight against Usman, I actually kinda felt like ‘Yeah man, give me a little sting’. In my mind I should have recognized, ‘it’s not used to being like this for you Tyron, this is different, don’t get too used to it.’ I should have known right there something crazy was going to happen.
I wasn’t prepared for it…It fu**ed me up a little. I was fu**ed up for a while. I never thought I was going to lose again. You go from first-class to boom, almost on the way back from the fight you’re in coach, asap. It changes right there.”
It’s hard to deny that his loss to Usman wasn’t the catalyst that set into motion his decline in the UFC. He appeared overly tentative in that fight and his ability to pull the trigger seemingly vanished in the fights that followed. However, Woodley will want to leave his slump in the rearview mirror and focus on what the future has in store.
