Earlier this week Sesame Street celebrated Pride month by including two gay fathers in an episode titled Family Day, proving once again the importance of the long-running children’s television show.
Sesame Street changed children’s television when it came out 50 years ago and it is still the gold standard for children’s educational programming.
Director Alan Muraoka, who plays the owner of Hooper’s Store on the show, shared his thoughts on the important episode.
‘Sesame Street has always been a welcoming place of diversity and inclusion. So I’m so excited to introduce Nina’s Brother Dave, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our sunny street,’ he wrote on Facebook.
‘I am so honoured and humbled to have co-directed this important and milestone episode.
‘Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family. Happy Pride to all!!!!’
Sesame Street is no stranger to talking about important topics.
The show continued to educate children about race and prejudice earlier this year with the addition of two Black Muppets.
Father Elijah and his five-year-old son Wes were added to the US children’s program as part of a new series called ABCs of Racial Literacy.
The series was launched by Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organisation behind Sesame Street, as part of its ‘commitment to racial justice’.
In the first video titled Explaining Race, Elijah and Wes take a break from their nature walk to talk with Elmo about skin tone.
Elmo compares his fur and Wes’s skin to the surrounding red and brown leaves.
‘Good observation, Elmo,’ Elijah replies before he explained: ‘Melanin is something we each have inside our bodies that makes the outside of our bodies the skin colour that it is. It also gives us our eye and hair colour’.
He then reminds viewers that ‘the colour of our skin is an important part of who we are, but we should all know that it’s OK we all look different in so very many ways.’
