Towie’s Danielle Armstrong had pre-cancerous cells removed as she encourages others to get smear tests
Danielle Armstrong revealed she had pre-cancerous cells removed after a smear test, as she encouraged fans to get checked out.
The Towie star took to Instagram with a lengthy post, opening up about her recent health scare.
Alongside a selfie of her lying on a sofa, the 33-year-old began: ‘Have You Booked Your Smear Test?… Last month I was invited to have my smear test as for the UK ladies between the ages of 25 – 49 it should be every 3 years we get checked.
‘My results showed some abnormal cells and I was referred to have a Colposcopy (this is a simple procedure to look at the cervix for the abnormal cells to see if they could be cancerous or not).
‘Yesterday when having the procedure the nurses decided to do something called a “Loop Excision” which is basically using a electrical current to cut away the abnormal cells.’
Danielle continued: ‘The reason for cutting away the cells was due to the abnormal cells being “Pre Cancerous Cells” and removing them now can prevent them progressing to cancer in the future.
‘Is it uncomfortable… YES. Is their bleeding.. YES ( a little). Can it prevent cancer & save your life YES!!!
‘I just want to share this post with you all because I know 90% of my followers are female and between 25-49 [sic].’
She ended the post by urging: ‘So please ladies if you have still got to book your Smear Test BOOK IT TODAY.’
The smear test, which is preventative of cancer, checks the health of the cervix and is offered to all women between the ages of 25 and 64. Women are invited back for a screening every three years after their first test.
Danielle’s post comes after it was revealed that nearly a third of women didn’t attend a screening in the last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, despite receiving an invitation.
Fans rushed to praise the ITVBe star for raising awareness of the importance of having a smear test, flooding the post with supportive comments.
‘As a practice nurse who does smears everyday, I thank you for highlighting the importance of them! We have soooo many young girls who just don’t turn up which is such a shame x so thank you,’ a follower said.
‘I had this done 6months ago after my regular smear came back abnormal, just had my first smear afterward which came back fine,’ a fan replied.
‘I was terrified to have the colposcopy as I read some awful stories online but honestly it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting!! Well done for raising awareness, it’s so not worth the risk putting these things off!’
An Instagram user wrote: ‘Such a great message to share, I had and went through the same process you did. It’s uncomfortable but certainly saves lives.. xxx.’
‘Such a good message to share, so important,’ one added. ‘Hope you feel better soon – so worth the procedure xxxx.’
