“If I Sleep Too Well It Means Something is Off”: Matteo Berrettini On Reaching Queen’s Club Championship 2021 Finals

The Queen’s Club Championship is coming to its end stages. The semifinals got over today, and all eyes will be on the finals taking place tomorrow. In an unusual circumstance, Matteo Berrettini has reached his first final at the Queen’s Club Championship. The Italian had a tough draw, however, he has managed to overcome against all odds.

Berrettini beat Alex De Minaur in straight sets, and reached the final in his debut at the tournament. He won 6-4, 6-4 and will face homeboy, Cameron Norrie. Cameron won his semifinal match against Denis Shapovalov, 7-5, 6-3.

Matteo Berrettini and his run at the Queen’s Club Championship

Matteo Berretini possibly had the toughest draw in the tournament. The Italian played against tournament favorite, Andy Murray, in the second round, and won for the first time against the Scott. Even though this was the second meeting between the two players, the World No9 managed to pull off an upset. Berrettini played against an injury prone Murray, as a result of which he won 6-3, 6-3 against the Scott. Berretini beat another Briton, Dan Evans, in the quarterfinals, and set up his semifinal match with Alex De Minaur.

The semifinal matchup against Alex was another comfortable win for the Italian man. The World No9 played against the Aussie for the first time competitively. Berrettini managed to ease past the World No22 in just 84 minutes, to reach the final in his first Queen’s Championship.

That was the goal of the week [making the final], and now I have one more step. It is a great achievement, especially for the history of this tournament. I am really happy because to beat Alex today, I had to play my best tennis,” said Berrettini in his post match interview.

Berretini’s mentality and records

Matteo Berrettini can become the first player to win the tournament in his debut run, since Boris Becker in 1985. The Italian has reached the final without dropping a set yet, and will look for a podium finish in the warmup tournament before Wimbledon Championships. He will look to add another grass court title under his belt, since winning in Stuttgart in 2019.

The mentality is that I always think I can win my service games. I know that I have a big weapon with my serve and first shot. If I sleep too well it means something is off ahead of the final. I have to be nervous and tight a little bit, otherwise the adrenaline does not kick in and it is tougher to play,” said Berrettini in his post match interview.

The finals will be played tomorrow, at 18:00 IST. The two finalists will be meeting for the first time, and the winner will have the Wimbledon Championship on their mind. The winner will get a major confidence boost after winning the final tomorrow.
