Sergio Perez Refutes Claims of Being Max Verstappen’s ‘Wingman’ at Red Bull F1

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez overlooks the ‘wingman’ tag. Furthermore, the Mexican is not ruling out the title chances this season. Sergio Perez who started the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at P6 finishes ahead of his teammate and secured his first win with his new team.

Max Verstappen looked poised to secure his first-ever victory at Baku until he tumbled out after a tire blowout, which resulted in a red flag.

With Checo still adapting to his new car, the Dutch opened up a decent lead over his teammate in the Drivers’ Championship. Max Verstappen leads Sergio Perez by 36 points despite the former failed to add any points to his championship tally at Baku.

Sergio Perez on his ‘Wingman’ tag

Sergio Perez qualified at P4, 0.455 seconds behind his teammate, Max Verstappen who secured the fifth pole of his career at the French Grand Prix.

When asked if he was approving the ‘wingman’ tag, the Mexican said, “Well, I am just focusing on myself and trying to do the best I possibly can for myself and for the team. You just maximize every single weekend with what I am able to do in terms of performance.”

When asked if he could mount a title challenge, Sergio Perez said, “Yeah, there is a long way ahead, it is only race number [seven]. We will see what happens. My races are much better than my Saturdays which is what really matters.

“I am just going to improve. Of all, I think I am going to be the one who improves the most so as long as I stay in the mix, who knows what will happen.”

‘Every single time I drive the car I just learn’: Perez

After signing for the Milton Keynes-based team, Sergio Perez suggested he would need five races to completely figure out the car, and he eventually secured the victory in his sixth race.

Despite recording a victory in his last race weekend at Baku, the Mexican has admitted he is still getting used to the RB16B.

“I still think that the more races I do, I have come to a team that is different to what I have been used to and every single time I drive the car I just learn,” he explained.“When I experience low fuel loads, it is just getting better.”
