THROWBACK: A Vintage Bloody Battle Between Clay Guida and Diego Sanchez

Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida fought one of the most iconic battles in the UFC back in June 20, 2009. It was the TUF finale where the two veterans clashed in a Lightweight bout for three rounds. Fans were expecting a great show, but little did they know they were about to witness history. The fight got featured as the main event of the evening where both Sanchez and Guida stood toe to toe for the complete three rounds.

It was an intense battle, displaying the toughness and heart of both the fighters. Every second and every move was closely watched as the fight became close-quarter combat.

Ten years after the battle, it was announced that the fight will go into the UFC Hall of Fame for the courageous display of both the fighters. It became the fifth fight to enter the UFC Hall of Fame Fight Wing.

Round 1- Diego Sanchez vs Clay Guida- Let’s fight!

Both the fighters rushed in and started swinging their arms straight away. Guida took the worse of that exchange, which wobbled him and forced him to shoot for the takedown. But in the attempt, he ate a knee from ‘The Nightmare’. Sanchez unleashed a fury of punches and knees on ‘The Carpenter’ but Guida absorbed it all. Guida dodged an uppercut and finally got his takedown.

‘The Carpenter’ couldn’t keep Sanchez down for long. Soon as the fight went up on the feet he got rocked by a left head kick from ‘The Nightmare’ but somehow managed to survive.

Round 2 -‘The Carpenter’ gets another takedown

Guida came in more calculated in the second round. As blood poured through his nose, Guida avoided the strike exchange and took the fightback on the mat. He controlled the position but could cause much damage to his opponent. Sanchez started throwing nasty elbows from the bottom, which opened up cuts on Guida’s head. The round ended with Guida in the top position.

Round 3- Written in the history books

As the round started, the duo went back to work straight away without wasting any time. Both the fighters were tired but looked determined to fight till their very last breath. They started trading strikes in the middle of the octagon. Guida attempted a takedown, but Sanchez was quick to slide to his left and took Guida’s back.

The blood made it hard to grip as ‘The Carpenter’ easily turned around, getting into the top position. Sanchez tried to pull an armbar from the bottom but could hold the grip because of the blood. The fight ended with the final buzzer, as both the fighters raised their hands to the sky.

The Judge’s scorecard was 29-28, 29-27, and 28-29 in favor of Sanchez. Both Clay Guida and Diego Sanchez earned the respect of fight fans all around the world as the battle went into the history books.
