ALAS! Sloane Stephens Raises Wimbledon Championships 2021 Concerns Amid Latest Withdrawal

Sloane Stephens had shown a small revival at French Open 2021 after she had reached the fourth round and had lost to the eventual champion, Barbora Krejcikova. But just as she started her grass-court preparation Stephens announced sad news and raised concerns over her Wimbledon Championships 2021 participation.

The US Open 2017 champ, Sloane Stephens had to withdraw from Bad Homburg Open because of a foot injury. Stephens was scheduled to play singles and doubles however, the tournament announced the American’s withdrawal.

“@SloaneStephensit was unfortunately not possible today to play her first-round match against Laura Siegemund because she is slowed down by a foot injury. We wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you again soon in Bad Homburg, Sloane!,” the tournament tweeted.

“Unfortunately, my foot is causing me trouble, and it’s not wise to compete,” Stephens said.

For the women’s doubles, she was partnering with her American counterpart, Amanda Anisimova. In the singles draw, Stephens has now been replaced by Indian player Riya Bhatia.

Simona Halep withdrew from Bad Homburg Open 2021 before Sloane Stephens

Stephens is not the first player to withdraw from Bod Hamburg Open 2021 just before Wimbledon. World No.3 Simona Halep‘s injury woes continued as her left calf injury again caused her to withdraw from a tournament. The Romanian was the top seed and was making her return after skipping French Open 2021.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce my withdrawal from Roland Garros this year. Unfortunately, the tear in my left calf muscle needs more time to recover, and the timeline is just too short,” Halep said.

Stephens has not won a title since 2018. Her last title was the Miami Open title in 2018. That title triumph was her sixth title in six finals and since then she has lost three finals including a French Open final in 2018 against Halep and a WTA Finals final against Elina Svitolina. Wimbledon 2021 will be another tough tournament for the American if she plays.
