Brawn Explains Why He ‘Wasn’t Convinced’ of Verstappen’s Ability to Overtake Hamilton

Max Verstappen stole Mercedes’ day in the closing laps of the race. It looked like Lewis Hamilton was going to get the Silver Arrows the comeback they deserved after two horrible weekends. However, Red Bull’s prodigy had something up his sleeve which was enough to give him the lead and win the race.

However, F1 managing director Ross Brawn isn’t convinced that Max could have overtaken Lewis. He believes that Hamilton is a driver that can make the most out of the situation and come on top as the winner.

In his column, Brawn wrote, “What Lewis demonstrated was his ability to bring more out of tyres in difficult circumstances compared with Valtteri, who obviously took more life out of the tyres. Lewis is a master of eking out performance.”

“I still wasn’t convinced that even five laps from the end, Max was going to do it, so impressive was Lewis on that stint. It could have gone either way,” he concluded.

The Dutchman extends his lead in the title race

After his heartbreaking end at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Verstappen was motivated to make amends. And, he did exactly that as he achieved pole at the French Grand Prix, giving a boost for Sunday’s race.

However, he made a mistake in turn 1 of the opening lap, losing the lead to Hamilton. But, the 23-year-old was determined and attacked Lewis. As the Grand Prix was coming to an end, Max got back the lead and kept it till the chequered flag dropped.

The Red Bull prodigy took home twenty-five points and an extra one for having the fastest lap. While Hamilton had to settle for second earning just eighteen points.

Verstappen has now created a twelve-point gap between him and rival, Hamilton. He will aim to keep that lead as they prepare to race in Red Bull’s home race in Austria at the Red Bull Ring next week.

Can Max keep his cool and deliver another stellar performance in the next round? We will just have to wait and find out. But what do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
