“Have That Big Picture in My Mind”: Bianca Andreescu Remains Hopeful Of a Strong Comeback at Wimbledon Championships 2021

When a young Bianca Andreescu stunned the legendary Serena Williams in the finals of 2019 US Open, there were high expectations on the young Canadian to reach the zenith on the WTA tour.

Unfortunately, repeated injuries shattered the hopes of Andreescu. Also, the on-set of COVID-19 pandemic ensured that the youngster was out of competitive action for more than a year.

However, when Andreescu finally made a comeback on-tour this year at the Australian Open, she wasn’t able to perform as well as she could have preferred.

But, the Canadian’s best performance of 2021 came at the Miami Open, where she reached the finals before withdrawing mid-way against Ashleigh Barty.

Even her hopes of making a solid comeback on the European clay-court swing was shattered when she tested positive for COVID-19 upon arriving at Madrid. This had an effect on Andreescu’s French Open performance as she lost in the first round against Tamara Zidansek.

Bianca Andreescu explains how she coped up with injury struggles over the last year

With an all-round game, the Canadian can be a strong-contender for big titles if she stays fit in the future. Preparing for Wimbledon, Andreescu decided to play the grass-court event at Eastbourne International.

Talking about how difficult the past two years were, the young tennis star opened up about her struggle with injuries amidst a global pandemic.

After doing so well in 2019, boom, I get injured. I’m off for six months. I’m ready to play Indian Wells, first tournament back, and then literally that tournament is when everything started. I was there for, like three days and everyone said it’s canceled and I had to go back”, explained the Canadian.

Andreescu also mentioned how difficult the quarantine at the Australian Open was. Despite running a successful tournament, the ‘happy slam’ received mixed reactions from players owing to the preferential treatment given to certain top-ranked professionals.

And then other issues happened during that time, some health issues with my family and this and that. But like I said before, I really tried to persevere through these moments. But then something else happened, which was the quarantine in Australia, and then the quarantine in Madrid, me catching COVID”, continued Bianca.

“Other people have it way worse” – Andreescu continues optimism over her comeback

From her words, it’s evident that the last year was a difficult time for Andreescu to cope with. Just like many other players, the Canadian is also struggling to find her peak form on the WTA tour. Despite a terrible year, Bianca Andreescu remains hopeful of a strong comeback this year.

Even though it could seem like the world is crashing down, I made sure to stay as grateful as I could, because, like, other people have it way worse, you know, so that really keeps me going. I try to have that big picture in my mind all the time”, concluded the Canadian.

Bianca Andreescu didn’t have a great run at Wimbledon so far as she only made it to the first-round in 2017 and lost in the qualifiers the next year.

As the organizers at SW19 sticks to the traditional seeding formula for women’s singles this year, the Canadian will face a dip in her seeding due to her past performances.
