“Not That Far”: Daniil Medvedev Speaks About Chances of Overtaking Novak Djokovic As World No. 1 at Wimbledon Championships 2021

Russian player Daniil Medvedev is one of the top players in the men’s game. His results in the recent seasons indicate the threat he is and can be at the very biggest of stages. No doubt, his preferred surface to play on is the hard court; however, he surprised many when he came as far as the quarterfinal at the French Open 2021.

Medvedev recently spoke on the possibility of overtaking Novak Djokovic and becoming the new World No. 1 player. He could do that during the Wimbledon Championships 2021, but for that to happen, he will need a few scenarios going in his favor.

While speaking to EssentiallySports, Medvedev stated, “Yeah I didn’t know I am not that far in one way but I think to probably overtake him I have to win Wimbledon or maybe I don’t make the finals and he has lost early but this is too many circumstances.”

The Russian player knows that there is still a lot of work to put in and he rightly wants to focus on his progress. However, at the same time, he is motivated by the opportunity that lies in front of him. If he manages to go deep into the Wimbledon Championships this year and simultaneously Djokovic losses in the early rounds, things can turn in his favor.

The 25-year-old added, “I always try to focus on myself first because again to have this chance is a motivation but you need to win 1st round, 2nd round, 3rd round, etc to try to have this chance and if you think about it too early, that has no sense.

“So I just want to focus on playing good in Wimbledon if I can do something great and finally I’ll have the chance to get Novak it’s going to be amazing but we are still far from there.”

Both Daniil and Novak faced each other at the Australian Open 2021 final. The Serb dominated the match and lifted his 18th Grand Slam title.

Now that the focus is on the grass, it will be interesting to see how these two supremely gifted athletes perform during the Wimbledon Championships 2021 in South West 19, London.
