Dustin Johnson Invests in Lacrosse Franchise Along With Wayne Gretzky and NBA Legend Steve Nash

A world-renowned trio of athletes and a billionaire sports owner have lightened up lacrosse by investing in it. Wayne Gretzky, Dustin Johnson, and Steve Nash join Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai as investors in the National Lacrosse League’s new franchise Las Vegas. 

Wayne Gretzky is one of the greatest players of ice hockey. He is a 15-time NFL All-Star who won four Stanley Cups in his career, while Steve Nash is a famous basketball player. He was a two-time NBA MVP and has recently concluded his first season as a coach. Dustin Johnson is the 2020 Masters and 2016 U.S. Open Champion and is currently the World No. 2, according to OWGR.

Dustin Johnson has had a dream run as a golfer since 2020 and has won plenty of trophies in the last season. Dustin is engaged to Paulina Gretzky, daughter of Wayne Gretzky since 2013, and the couple even has two sons. 

“It is an honor and privilege to work together to bring the game of box lacrosse to the Las Vegas community,” the new owners said in a joint statement. “On the business side and across our franchise generally, we will also be forward-thinking and innovative – and all while staying true to the fast-paced and exciting nature of both box lacrosse and the city of Las Vegas. We can’t wait to get started.”

But the team still does not have a name yet and will start its season in 2022. The Las Vegas franchise is part of the expansion that includes Panther City Lacrosse Club in Texas.

It is interesting to note that everyone apart from Dustin Johnson has a connection with lacrosse. Gretzky started playing lacrosse at the age of 6. His father thought this might assist him with his footwork in ice hockey, while even Nash played lacrosse as a kid before turning towards basketball. Nash has a connection with this game as he played collegiate lacrosse at Yale. 

Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. In both 2019 and 2020, 30 colleges have added men’s and women’s lacrosse as varsity options. And even at the professional level, the game is growing at a rapid pace as well. The NLL had nine teams in 2017 and 2018, and the number has doubled in the last three years.
