“I Didn’t Want to Have a Video Wall” – Tony Khan is Not Too Impressed With the WWE ThunderDome

AEW, the upstart promotion of Tony Khan, was the only promotion alongside WWE that produced weekly shows for their audience. WWE initially started off the so-called ‘pandemic era’ inside their Performance Center. While AEW made Daily’s Place in Jacksonville their base.

However, WWE upped the ante right before SummerSlam last year with the introduction of the Award-winning WWE ThunderDome; a live virtual experience where fans can join the action inside the arena on video walls. However, AEW CEO Tony Khan never believed AEW needed something like it.

During an interview with UPI.com, AEW CEO Tony Khan revealed he too had an option to get video walls like WWE for AEW Dynamite. But he denied. He instead went the route of having ‘real’ crowds.

Khan said, “I didn’t want to have a video wall, and I pushed back when I got pushed to do a video wall. It was a fine idea and WWE did it, but it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I respect it, it’s good and it’s economical, but I wanted to continue to find a way to do the shows for the fans every week.”

AEW were the first among them and WWE to introduce wrestlers from the roster at ringside as crowd. And it definitely made the product even better to watch considering it only seemed like empty-arena matches with no reactions in the beginning.

It’s safe to say the WWE ThunderDome is a one of a kind experience. WWE did an incredible job adapting and introducing it during a difficult time. One can only imagine how Daily’s Place would’ve looked like if Tony Khan had given the nod to have video walls in AEW.

AEW already welcomed back fans at full capacity during Double or Nothing 2021 last month. This made the first promotion to have a PPV at full-capacity. Note that WrestleMania 37 did have fans, but socially distanced. However, the number was ten folds higher.

Coming back to AEW, Tony Khan’s promotion will also be getting back on the road before WWE. AEW begins their travelling schedule on July 7 at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, FL. WWE begins theirs on July 16th.
