Mariah Carey has supported Britney Spears after the singer spoke out for the first time on her conservatorship, comparing it to ‘abuse’.

The Womanizer hitmaker was placed under the order in 2008 at the height of her mental health struggles, with a court putting her father, Jamie, in control of her personal affairs and finances indefinitely.

She has now called for it to end, telling the court that she ‘wants her life back’.

Following her testimony, Mariah sent the singer a message of support, tweeting: ‘We love you Britney!!! Stay strong.’

Halsey added: ‘Bless Britney and I hope with my whole heart she is awarded freedom from this abusive system. She deserves it more than anything. I admire her courage speaking up for herself today.’

Pop duo Jedward wrote: ‘Justice for @Britneyspears #FreeBritney.’

Brandy Norwood said: ‘Sending all my love and support to Britney Spears and her fans,’ while Anne Marie added: ‘I SAID #FREEBRITNEY.’

During the hearing on Wednesday, Britney, 39, said: ‘They’ve done a good job at exploiting my life. So I feel like it should be an open court hearing and they should listen to what I have to say.

‘A lot has happened since two years ago, the last time I was in court. I don’t think I was heard on any level when I came to court last time.

‘After I’ve told the whole world I’m okay, it’s a lie. I’m not happy and I can’t sleep. I’m depressed. I cry everyday … It’s my wish and dream for all of this to end. I want my life back.

‘I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised. I want to end the conservatorship without having to be evaluated. I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive.’

Britney had requested to address the court directly in April, with her lawyer Samuel D Ingham III filing a request with Judge Brenda Penny.

A conservatorship is a legal concept of guardianship in America where representatives are appointed following a court ruling that an individual is not capable of making their own decisions.
