Vin Diesel has spoken out on his feud with Dwayne Johnson, revealing that his ‘tough love’ approach to producing may have rubbed The Rock up the wrong way.

The pair’s relationship appeared to be under strain since 2016 while filming Fate of the Furious, when Dwayne tweeted: ‘My female co-stars are always amazing, and I love ’em. My male co-stars however are a different story.’

The film was set to be the last appearance for Dwayne, 49, in the main cast of the Fast franchise which he had joined from 2011’s Fast Five, though he appeared in the spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw in 2019.

Vin, 53, told Men’s Health that his ‘tough love’ style of producing to get the best out of Dwayne as Luke Hobbs, might have been the catalyst for their feud

He explained: ‘It was a tough character to embody, the Hobbs character. My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be.’

Vin added that he wanted to change the perception of Dwayne as a wrestler – though he had already appeared in several successful films prior to Fast Five – to make him believable as an ex-Diplomatic Security Service agent.

‘As a producer to say, OK, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who’s associated with wrestling, and we’re going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don’t know – Hobbs hits you like a ton of bricks,’ Vin says.

‘That’s something that I’m proud of, that aesthetic. That took a lot of work.’

He added: ‘We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing.’

The pair have since appeared to make peace with each other, with Dwayne even thanking his ‘brother Vin’ in an Instagram video after the release of Hobbs & Shaw, at the peak of their feud during the Fate of the Furious promo tour the pair were reportedly kept apart ‘as much as possible’ after Dwayne’s tweet.
