Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 3 of Loki.

The director of Marvel series Loki has explained how ‘important’ it was to her to acknowledge the fact that the God of Mischief is bisexual in the MCU, saying her ‘heart is so full’.

In episode three of the Marvel show, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and the Loki variant, who goes by the name Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), land on the planet Lamentis-1 in the year 2077 during an apocalypse while on the run from the TVA (Time Variance Authority).

The pair sneakily board a train en route to an evacuation vessel, sitting down for a quick chinwag before continuing with their perilous mission to find a power source for their teleportation device.

When asked by Sylvie whether he’s romantically involved with any ‘would-be princesses’ or ‘another prince’, he replies: ‘A bit of both. I suspect the same as you.’

Fans were ‘screaming’ with excitement over the confirmation of Loki’s sexual orientation, with the director, Kate Herron, outlining on Twitter how much it meant to her to acknowledge.

‘From the moment I joined @LokiOfficial it was very important to me, and my goal, to acknowledge Loki was bisexual,’ Kate wrote.

‘It is a part of who he is and who I am too. I know this is a small step but I’m happy, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon in #mcu #Loki.’

In Norse mythology, Loki is described as being bisexual and gender-fluid, both of which he is also referred to as in the Marvel comics.

While a recent promo video for Loki confirmed the character is gender-fluid in the MCU, he is now the first openly bisexual character in the cinematic universe.

Tessa Thompson, who made her debut in the MCU as Valkyrie in the 2017 film Thor: Ragnarok, said a couple of years ago that she ‘always intended’ to play the character as bisexual.

There was supposed to be a scene in Taika Waititi-directed film that directly referenced her being bisexual.

However, the scene in question, which would have shown another woman leaving Valkyrie’s room after spending the night, was not included in the final cut.

In the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, the introduction of the first openly gay character in the MCU sparked backlash as the character in question was unnamed, only appeared for a few seconds in a counselling session and was played by co-director Joe Russo in a cameo.

‘So the hyped up “first MCU gay character” was just a 5 second Joe Russo cameo in #endgame talking about going on a date with another guy? Gee thanks,’ one person tweeted at the time.

Loki returns next Wednesday and is available to watch on Disney Plus.
