Rafael Nadal’s Doctor to Decide Dominic Thiem’s Wimbledon Championships 2021 Fate Following Latest Injury Episode in Mallorca

Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem has visited Rafael Nadal’s doctor to get an assessment on the injury that forced him to concede his opening-round clash at Mallorca Open.

Leading 5-2 against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, Thiem called for medical help after he felt a sudden burst of pain in his wrist.

Unable to carry on as the pain persisted, Thiem withdrew from the tournament. The freak niggle not only raised doubts around his participation at this year’s Wimbledon Championships but also added to his misfortunes that have seen him struggle for form and fitness this season.

Earlier, the 27-year-old has now shared an update on Twitter saying that he got an MRI done on his wrist at a local hospital after withdrawing from the Mallorca Open. However, he revealed that the MRI failed to determine the extent of his injury.

Thiem added that he has now decided to travel to Barcelona and get his injury assessed by a specialist.

“Yesterday, during the match I had a problem with my wrist. I went immediately to do an MRI at the hospital in Palma de Mallorca. The results weren’t that clear and I have decided to go to Barcelona to check with a specialist,” the reigning US Open champion said.

Should the injury rule him out of Wimbledon eventually, it will deal another numbing blow to his chances of salvaging a season that has been blighted by niggles and a string of underwhelming performances.

In another tweet, Thiem said that he will get his injury diagnosed afresh and expects the results to come through in a matter of days.

Based on his injury assessment, he will take a call on whether to play Wimbledon.

“I hope I can get the results and a clear diagnosis in the next (few) days,” the 27-year-old wrote on Twitter.

After following up on his fourth-round exit at the Australian Open with losses in Doha and Dubai, Thiem took a seven-week break from tennis to nurse his niggles and rediscover his appetite for titles.
