Ben Shephard was back Good Morning Britain today with a series of leg injuries after taking a tumble during a football match.

The 46-year-old presenter joined Susanna Reid on the programme where he she revealed he is currently sporting a brace in a bid to help him recover.

Explaining how he sustained his wounds, Ben said: ‘A few weeks ago, you may remember I played in the cup final of the Arthur Dunn Veteran’s Cup, my old boys’ team.

‘Without realising, I have ruptured my ACL, I’ve torn my meniscus, and I’ve fractured part of my leg as well.’

‘That’s a nasty injury,’ Dr Hilary Jones commented.

‘Interestingly, I didn’t realise I had done it quite so badly,’ Ben continued. ‘I carried on playing for about 25 minutes before I thought, “Do you know what, it feels a little bit unstable.”

‘It turns out, I’d severed all the nerves which is why I couldn’t feel any pain and just carried on playing.’

‘Basically, this is the ligament that holds the lower leg onto the upper leg, so it is kind of dramatic,’ Dr Hilary said.

‘The sad thing is it didn’t effect my standard of football,’ Ben laughed.

The ACL, an abbreviation for the the anterior cruciate ligament, is one of the key ligaments that help stabilise your knee joint and connects your thighbone (femur) to your shinbone (tibia).

Meanwhile, the meniscus is a piece of cartilage that provides a cushion between your thighbone and shinbone.

Besides appearing on Good Morning Britain, Ben also hosts Tipping Point.

In a post on Twitter earlier this year, he shocked fans with the revelation that he had 175 episodes of the ITV gameshow to record between April and July.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
