Key Stat Shows How Giannis Antetokounmpo Was Let Down By His Bucks Teammates in Game 1 Loss vs Hawks

The Bucks met the Hawks in their home court as the favorites to take the opening game. However, the Hawks, just as they did against the Knicks and the Sixers, won their away game to start the series with 1-0. It was Giannis Antetokounmpo and his jams up against Trae Young and his triples.

It is safe to claim that the Hawks are now an unofficial best clutch team with ruling the second half in every other game. They pulled it thrice against the Sixers and they again repeated the same with the Bucks. 

The Bucks failed Giannis Antetokounmpo in the clutch time

The game entered the final five minutes with the score tied at 98-98. But that was when Giannis Antetokounmpo converted a jump shot quickly followed by a layup, both on Jrue Holiday’s assist. Apart from the one free throw that he missed, the Greek Freak was flawless in those final minutes. 

Giannis Antetokounmpo was the Bucks leading scorer in clutch time, scoring 10 points on 4-4 from the field.

Late in the decisive quarter, the Bucks were 111-107 ahead, thanks to Giannis’ two alley-oops again on Jrue’s Assists. But with every other teammate letting the Bucks down, it was nothing that the fearless deer could do about it. That final missed three-point attempt from Khris Middleton further snatched the game away from the Bucks’ hand.

Where did the Hawks prove better than their opponents?

The answer lies in the Bucks’ inability to lock Trae Young. It’s true that Jrue Holiday played 42 minutes and scored a 33-point double-double, but he failed at one area and that was on guarding Ice Trae better. With Trae, the idea was simple: keep more possessions and attempt more shots to convert better odds.

On that strategy, the 22-YO attempted a game-high 34 field goals while converting half of them. He was poor from the three-point range but covered for that with his free throw accuracy. Him and John Collins were a great duo making some of the impossible plays possible. 

With Khris Middleton struggling as much as Bogdan Bogdanovic did, the match was still a street fight which the Hawks won. Now, Giannis and men will have to figure a way to draw a better clutch order to keep from repeating this in Game 2.
