Kyle Larson Breaks Another Record in his Dream NASCAR Cup Run

Kyle Larson has been in red hot form in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has notched up his fourth consecutive win, including his All-Star triumph. With his latest win, Larson has broken his personal record for the most laps led. Everything started off in 2014 when he led 53 laps during the entire season.

From there, the tally steadily increased to 115 in the 2015 season and more than double that in the 2016 season. In the 2017 season, Kyle Larson really exploded onto the scene with a career-best total of 1352 laps. Admittedly, the numbers dipped in 2018 and 2019 with 782 and 529 laps respectively.

However in 2021, Larson has broken his own record, notching up 1426 laps. The best part is that 17 races are complete and there is a chance for Larson to increase that tally. In the regular season, Larson has 9 races left to try and increase the gulf even further. In addition to that, he can also try his luck in the playoff stages and increase his lead lap count even further. Given that the Hendrick Motorsports team has been so dominant, there is a huge chance of that happening.

How is Kyle Larson fairing in the championship?

Admittedly, Denny Hamlin still leads the Cup Series championship. However, the reality of the situation is that he is hanging on by his fingernails. To be precise, Larson has slashed the gap to 10 points between himself and the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. At Darlington, Larson was 144 points adrift and cut the abyss by two points after Dover.

At the Circuit of the Americas, the gap shrank further to 110 points. However at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Larson entered the double digits for the first time, with a 76-point gap. When the Cup at at Sonoma arrived, Kyle Larson edged closer, with 47 points between them. Finally he cut it down to 10 points after the Cup Series race at the Nashville Superspeedway.
