Planned Parenthood defends Britney Spears after heartbreaking IUD revelation where she’s ‘blocked from getting pregnant’
Planned Parenthood has spoken out in support of Britney Spears after she claimed her conservatorship has blocked her from removing her IUD so she can have a baby.
The Toxic singer appeared at a court hearing regarding her controversial conservatorship, and pleaded with the judge to remove the order permanently.
Britney, 39, said that she’s felt depressed for years due to her wellbeing and finances being controlled by her father Jamie Spears, and described the conservatorship as ‘abusive’.
In one of the most heartbreaking reveals, the singer said she wants to have a baby with boyfriend Sam Asghari but that her conservators have stopped her visiting a doctor to have the IUD removed.
An IUD is a method of birth control that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
Planned Parenthood’s president and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson has spoken out about Britney’s plight and tweeted: ‘We stand in solidarity with Britney and all women who face reproductive coercion.
‘Your reproductive health is your own — and no one should make decisions about it for you.’
Dr. Krishna Upadhya, Planned Parenthood’s vice president of quality care and health equity, also told CBS that Britney’s ordeal is ‘unacceptable and highlights the critical issue of reproductive coercion’.
The doctor added: ‘Unfortunately, it is all too common for people to experience relationships where someone abuses their power and exerts control over another person’s reproductive decisions.
‘No one should be pressured into a decision around whether or not they should use birth control, or which method to use and when.’
Britney addressed the court remotely on Wednesday and said: ‘I have an IUD in my body right now that won’t let me have a baby and my conservators won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out.
‘I feel ganged up on. I feel bullied and I feel left out and alone. I want to be able to get married and have a baby.’
Another hearing is expected to take place in July regarding Britney’s request to terminate the conservatorship.
