Samuel L Jackson to be awarded first Oscar as he’s honoured alongside Danny Glover
Samuel L Jackson is among the stars to be honoured at the Oscars in 2022, with the actor set to get his first Academy Award.
It has been announced that the Board of Governors will present their annual Honorary Awards to the star alongside Elaine May and Liv Ullmann. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be given to Danny Glover.
The statuettes will be presented at the Academy’s 12th annual Governors Awards in January.
Academy president David Rubin said of the stars: ‘Sam Jackson is a cultural icon whose dynamic work has resonated across genres and generations and audiences worldwide, while Elaine May’s bold, uncompromising approach to filmmaking, as a writer, director and actress, reverberates as loudly as ever with movie lovers.
‘Liv Ullmann’s bravery and emotional transparency has gifted audiences with deeply affecting screen portrayals, and Danny Glover’s decades-long advocacy for justice and human rights reflects his dedication to recognising our shared humanity on and off the screen.’
The award is given ‘to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.’
It’s sure to be a proud moment for Jackson as the actor has, incredibly, never won an Oscar.
The 72-year-old also only ever been nominated once – in 1995 as best supporting actor for Pulp Fiction. The winner on the night was Martin Landau, for Tim Burton’s Ed Wood.
However, Jackson’s reaction hasn’t been forgotten, as he appeared to mouth: ‘S**t,’ after his loss.
Later asked if he thought he should have won instead, the Nick Fury actor told Deadline: ‘Yes I do.
‘I really don’t know many people who can not only remember Ed Wood but remember what Martin Landau did in it.
‘You know they were saying, “Martin’s been nominated a few times and you’re going to be around for a while. Don’t worry”. I was thinking I didn’t know it was a thing where if you get nominated for a few times you automatically get one. I thought it was supposed to be about impact.’
The 2021 Oscars ceremony took place amid the Covid-19 pandemic, as a scaled down version of the usual event.
However, fans are hoping that things are set to be back to normal for the 2022 event.
