Beyonce’s mother Tina Knowles and singer Cher led the way with a number of high-profile names reacting to the sentencing of George Floyd’s killer Derek Chauvin.

The policeman was handed a 22-and-a-half year jail term for the murder of Floyd after he knelt on his neck for nine minutes in May last year.

He was found guilty in April of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

On Friday he was sentenced to 22-and-a-half years in prison, with many stars slamming the legal system as they believed he should have been given longer.

Beyonce’s mother Tina Knowles, 67, wrote on Instagram after hearing the news: ‘Very Disappointing!

‘My Godson was sentenced to 20 years for 2 ounces of marijuana he has been In Jail for 11 years.

‘This man convicted of three charges He Murdered This man on TV before the world. And will only serve 15 ! The system has to change!’

Cher, 75, posted: ‘Understand Chauvin’s Mom Not Wanting Her Son 2 Be Gone,But GEORGE FLOYD’S MOM WILL “NEVER” SEE HER SON AGAIN.

‘Chauvin’s Lawyer Said ”If Only He Hadn’t Gone 2 Work That Day,Answered That call.” I SAY”IF ONLY HE HADNT PUT HIS WEIGHT ON GEORGE’S NECK FOR 9 MINS.HE HAD 9 MINS 2 STOP.’

Comedian Kathy Griffin, 60, wrote: ‘Of course, it’s not enough time. #GeorgeFloyd.’

Sandra Bernhard posted: ‘Should have been 40 years #GeorgeFloyd he is without remorse a stone cold murderer end of discussion #derekchauvin is devoid of emotion.’

She added on Instagram: ‘Maximum sentence #georgefloyd sentencing he’s never said a damn word #derekchauvin is an empty soul who destroyed a mans life and his family 22 1/2 years should have been 40.’

Meanwhile, legendary Star Trek actor George Takei, 84, shared: ‘I want 40 years for Chauvin.

‘George Floyd’s family already got a life sentence handed to them when Chauvin murdered him.’

Before Chauvin was sentenced, victim impact statements were read from Floyd’s seven-year-old daughter Gianna, his brothers Terrence and Philonise and his nephew Brandon Williams.

Gianna said: ‘’I ask about him all the time. I was asking how did my dad get hurt. I want to play with him.’

In addition to his jail sentence, Chauvin is banned from being in possession of a gun, ammunition or explosives for the rest of his life and must register as a predatory offender.

He had faced 12 and a half years in prison but this increased as the second charge he was convicted of, second-degree murder, carries a charge of up to 40 years in prison.

The judge wrote in his sentencing: ‘Mr. Chauvin, rather than pursuing the MPD mission, treated Mr. Floyd without respect and denied him the dignity owed to all human beings and which he certainly would have extended to a friend or neighbor.’
