Countdown star Nick Hewer has expressed his hope that viewers will be ‘generous’ towards new host Anne Robinson when she takes over from him after his last show.
On Friday June 25, former Apprentice star Nick made his final appearance on Countdown after first taking up the role a decade ago.
He is to be replaced by Anne on Monday, who has vowed to be kinder to the Countdown competitors after striking fear in the hearts of Weakest Link players during her tenure on the programme.
Before Nick bid farewell to the Countdown viewers, Susie Dent told Nick how much the other stars of the Channel 4 series are going to miss him.
‘That decade has gone by like a flash Nick,’ Rachel Riley added.
‘It’s been a pleasure working with you guys, Susie and Rachel, it’s been a real pleasure. Thank you so much,’ he said, before looking ahead to Anne’s first show next week.
‘So, that’s it! Back on Monday, and there’ll be somebody else in my chair, and I hope that she’ll have as much fun as I’ve had and I hope that you’ll be as generous to her as you’ve been to me,’ he stated.
Several Countdown viewers expressed how much they’re going to miss Nick, with one tweeting: ‘Absolutely fantastic #Countdown final with @Nick_Hewer today! An incredible host. Anne Robinson’s got big shoes to fill on Monday.’
‘I’m going to miss you so much on #Countdown .. it won’t be the same without you. Hope you enjoy your retirement, you deserve it,’ another wrote.
Ahead of her debut on Countdown, Anne made some cutting remarks about Nick, stating on Good Morning Britain: ‘I know that you were looking at that clock for 10 years and eating hundreds of Ripple chocolate bars.’
While she wished him a ‘wonderful retirement’, she then added: ‘I don’t know how long I’ll go on but as you know, women do last longer in jobs than men.’
Nonetheless, Nick didn’t seem offended by Anne’s comments, smiling as he replied: ‘How sweet of her! How lovely!’
On the day of his last show, Nick tweeted that the Countdown team had left a ‘big bunch of flowers and a bottle of bubbly’ outside of his door.
‘Thanks a million to a great team and a big thank you to all those who sent their best wishes to me as I begin my search for a pair of slippers,’ he added.
Countdown returns on Monday at 2.10pm on Channel 4.
