Lily Collins is going to play Polly Pocket in a film directed by Lena Dunham and sure, why not
Lily Collins is set to play the classic 90s toy Polly Pocket in a new movie written, produced and directed by Lena Dunham.
And there we were thinking Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts movie would be the strangest film announcement of the week.
Emily In Paris star Lily, 32, has been cast in the movie based on the beloved miniature doll, which came in her own clamshell case that opened to form dollhouses and other playsets.
Lena, 35, is producing the film alongside MGM and Mattel with her compay Good Thing Going, while Lily will also produce.
The Girls creator and star said: ‘Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me – Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM.
‘I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart playful films that speak to them without condescension.’
Lily added: ‘I’m so excited to partner with this inspiring powerhouse of a team. Developing this project with Robbie, Lena, Mattel and MGM to reintroduce Polly in a fun, modern way has been such a treat.
‘As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, this is a real dream come true and I can’t wait to bring these tiny toys to the big screen.’
According to Deadline, the plot revolves around ‘a young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship’, and Lena clarified that the film would be about the original tiny Polly Pocket, rather than the larger iterations of the doll produced by Mattel over the years which came with multiple outfits.
Thank goodness for that.
This isn’t the first time Polly Pocket will be brought to the screen, although it is her first live-action adventure; Polly Pocket was made into an animated series in 2018, with its second season hitting Netflix in 2020.
However, the Polly in the show was a young girl who had a magical locket that allowed her and her friends to shrink down to a tiny size.
This is the latest in a string of movie announcements from Mattel and MGM that will bring all your favourite childhood toys to life (whether you want them to or not).
A Barney the Dinosaur movie produced by Daniel Kaluuya is on its way, while Margot Robbie is set to star as Barbie on the big screen.
Hot Wheels is also getting a big screen adaptation, while Vin Diesel is set to star in a Rock ‘m Sock ‘Em Robots film.
