Serena Williams, Daniil Medvedev, Bernard Tomic and Others in Heftiest Fines at the Wimbledon Championships

In tennis, the Wimbledon Championships is considered one of the most significant competitions. It is the oldest Grand Slam tournament played and the Club was established in 1877. Over the years, it is well aware of the various traditions followed by the All England Club. Players are allowed to do things within the rules and regulations or else they get fined heavily.

As the Wimbledon Championships are soon to begin, we take a look at the players who have received the biggest fines.

Bernard Tomic, $80,000, Wimbledon Championships 2019

The Australian player was fined purely for his ‘lack of effort’ when he was up against Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the opening round. The match was summed up in straight sets, 6-2 6-1 6-4, which lasted for just 58 minutes. Fans were left highly disappointed and the Australian athlete received a lot of negativity on social media due to his poor professionalism.

The American player was known to have an unwanted reputation. He was fined for his unsportsmanlike attitude. He was served with a hefty fine for his attitude, followed by verbally abusing the chair umpire and walking away from the match four games into the second set, and yelled at the crowd to “shut up”. The ITF banned him from competing in the next couple of Grand Slam events.

The Russian athlete was made to pay up for his poor antics. He fined comprised for three reasons, the first for insulting the Portuguese umpire and got a second penalty for further continuing the verbal onslaught. After that, things got bizarre as Daniil tossed coins towards her chair.

Victor Hanescu, $21,500, Wimbledon Championships 2010

The Romanian athlete was playing his third-round match when he squandered four match points after foot-faulting twice. That made him swear loudly and went as far as spitting in the direction of the audience. Many believed those foot faults were deliberately done.
