The Boys casts The Walking Dead star Laurie Holden as new superhero for season three
The Walking Dead actress Laurie Holden has been signed for a recurring role in season three of Amazon’s irreverent superhero show, The Boys.
The 51-year-old, who has appeared on TV series including The X-Files and The Americans, is probably best known for her stint as tough former lawyer Andrea on the first three seasons of long-running zombie show The Walking Dead.
Variety broke the news, and reports that she’ll be donning the guise of Crimson Countess for The Boys, a superhero with powers including flight, and heat and fire manipulation.
Laurie’s reps have since confirmed her addition to the cast to Metro.co.uk.
Crimson Countess is a parody of Marvel’s Scarlet Witch, a.k.a. Wanda Maximoff, who has recently been having a moment with the success of Disney Plus’s WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen in the role alongside Paul Bettany as Vision.
Season three is already shooting in Canada, having nabbed a renewal before the second season was shown, and Laurie joins other new additions to the cast including Sean Patrick Flanery as Gunpowder, Miles Gaston Villanueva as Supersonic and Nick Wechsler as Blue Hawk.
Based on graphic novels by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys provides a dark take on the world of superheroes and counts former US President Barack Obama among its fans.
It focuses on a group of vigilantes, led by Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) as they take on corruption in the form of Vought International and its elite superhero team, The Seven.
Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has also been exciting fans of the show recently, as a first-look picture of him, bearded and armoured in character as the rather mysterious Soldier Boy, has been released.
Lead Karl Urban, forever in our hearts as Lord of the Rings’ Éomer, has also been teasing his followers with updates from filming.
Posing next to Jensen and Jack, who were giving cheeky one-finger salutes, he promised a ‘next level diabolical’ return for the series.
The Boys is available to watch on Prime Video.
