The Crown viewers have a bone to pick with the casting team, after learning who will be playing John Major.

The cast of the Netflix hit is changing yet again for the final two seasons, with Imelda Staunton taking over from Olivia Colman as the Queen, Lesley Manville taking over as Princess Margaret, Helena Bonham Carter, Jonathan Pryce taking on the role of Prince Philip after Tobias Menzies, Dominic West playing Prince Charles after Josh O’Connor, and Elizabeth Debicki taking over as Princess Diana, after Emma Corrin’s award-winning performance.

As the show moves into the 1990s, John Major, who served as Prime Minister of a Conservative government from 1990 until 1997, will take over the spot left by Gillian Anderson’s departure as Margaret Thatcher.

Today, it was announced that Jonny Lee Miller will be playing Major, and people are feeling some sort of way that the dashing star of Hackers and Trainspotting and the ex-husband of Angelina Jolie will be playing the former Tory leader.

Specifically – they’re asking why The Crown is making them fancy John Major.

The Crown is known for giving people extremely confusing crushes after casting enduring crush of the internet Gillian Anderson as the former PM Thatcher, and this latest casting is just adding to that bafflement.

One tweet read: ‘Between this and casting Gillian Anderson as Maggie Thatcher The Crown is now the Olympics of challenge w**ks’, while others wondered if Edwina Currie was in charge of casting.

Others joked that Miller’s ex Angelina would be brought in to play Currie should the series depict the affair between the then backbencher and Major when he was the government whip in Thatcher’s government.

While most people are worried about having a, well, Major crush after series five of The Crown, nobody was doubting that Miller would do a good job in the role.

The 48-year-old has earned acclaim in recent years for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the US series Elementary, an updated version of the classic detective tale starring Lucy Liu as a gender-swapped Joan Watson and Natalie Dormer as Jamie Moriarty, from 2012 until 2019.

Guest stars playing political figures in The Crown tend to do pretty well in awards season, with John Lithgow winning a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Emmy and being nominated for a Golden Globe for playing Winston Churchill.

Anderson then won a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for her performance as Thatcher, so Miller has some big shoes to fill.

Filming for series five is set to kick off next month, and is expected to land on Netflix in 2022.
