“It’s a Disaster”: Petra Kvitova Pledges to Donate Share of Her Prize Money for Relief Funds in Czech Republic

On Thursday, June 24, 2021, a rare and deadly tornado with tennis ball-sized hailstones hit the southern border of the Czech Republic. It took lives, injured several, and disrupted entire villages. Notably, the area was not far from where the parents of Petra Kvitova reside.

At that time, the two-time Wimbledon champion was contesting at a tournament in Bad Homburg, Germany. Far away from the home where she spent her childhood, the news naturally got to her.

Consequently, Kvitova decided to pay a share of her winnings in Homburg in relief efforts for the people affected. She ended up as a semifinalist, losing to former World No.1 Angelique Kerber in a deciding tiebreaker.

Petra Kvitova surprised after rare tornado hits the Czech Republic

According to BBC, the government confirmed a loss of 1000 houses due to the disaster. It also stated that the wind transformed the villages into war zones. But mostly, it shook everyone because of its coming out of nowhere.

In her post-match press conference, Kvitova expressed her remorse about the situation. Thus, she also wants to do everything she can to restore the damages done.

“It’s a disaster, and it’s pretty close to my parents and my family where I grew up. I’m really sorry. I was very sad it happened in Czech Republic. Having a tornado, we probably never had it before. It was really surprising. I hope the people will be ok,” Kvitova said.

The local authorities have also begun rebuilding the affected areas. Also, during such uncertain times, the support from the community becomes a need of the hour. Hopefully, things will restore quickly in the Breclav and Hodonin districts, and injured find health.

Where will Kvitova play next?

The 31-year-old will try for her third Wimbledon title starting from Monday, June 28, 2021. She will play 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the first round.

After an unfortunate accident in Paris, Kvitova had to withdraw from the tournament after the opening round. Hence, she will look forward to making up for her loss in the Championships.

Given the circumstances, it is unknown how the 10th seed will open her campaign in London. Yet, fans from around the world will be behind her, supporting her in every match.
