“We Have to Be More Selective”: Roger Federer Raises Concerns Over His Tokyo Olympics 2021 Participation
It is a known thought that Roger Federer wants to win the Olympic singles gold medal to complete his trophy cabinet. He came close in the 2012 London Olympics, and at the Tokyo Olympics 2021, he has his last chance to win the gold. However, as Federer assesses his 2021 season ahead of Wimbledon Championships, Tokyo Olympics might not be a priority anymore.

In his pre-tournament press conference at Wimbledon Championships 2021, Federer dropped a bombshell regarding his Olympic participation. What was once presumed to be a done decision, now seems like Federer is having second thoughts regarding the Olympics.
“I wish I could tell you more. At the moment, things are not as simple as in the past. With age, we have to be more selective, can’t play it all.”
Federer’s decision might have been influenced by his inconsistent form in 2021. Never has Federer had an air of uncertainty ahead of Wimbledon, and despite his known prowess on grass, Federer looks pale to win the Wimbledon crown in 2021.
“I would like to go but we decided just to get through Wimbledon and see where we go from there,” Federer said.

If Federer goes to the Olympics, he will celebrate his 40th birthday in Tokyo. At that age, generally, sportspersons see a huge decline in performance and fatigue faster. Federer is looking after his body first and wants optimal use of the calendar. And if he can continue longer in the 2021 calendar without the Olympics, then he might pull the plug on his participation.
“It’s still my intention to go to the Olympic Games. But we will reassess everything after Wimbledon. It is my goal to play as much tournaments as possible. But it really depends on results and how the body is feeling,” he explained.

Federer has two Olympic medals. He has one gold medal in doubles that he won with Stan Wawrinka at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. And one silver medal in singles from the 2012 London Olympics. It will be interesting as to what Federer does after Wimbledon and how he moves forward.
