When Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Others Broke Wimbledon Championships Tradition

As the third Grand Slam event of the season is soon to begin, players are busy preparing themselves for the Wimbledon Championships 2021. This is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in sporting history. The All England Club was established in 1877.

One of the most notable factors about the Wimbledon Championships is the various traditions followed by one and all. The attires and outfits of players are one of the standout points during these two weeks. Players are instructed to adhere to the all-white colors. With time, organizers have only gotten stricter and have picked upon players for the minutest of errors when it comes to the dress code.

As the Wimbledon Championships 2021 is about to begin, we take a look at the players who have worn controversial outfits at the All England Club.

Outstanding outfits at the Wimbledon Championships

Way before Serena Williams wore the catsuit at the French Open, American player Anne White wore a white catsuit during the 1985 edition and raised eyebrows with regard to its appropriateness on and off the court. Australian tennis player Pat Cash drifted from the rule of all-white colors on the court when he sported a black and white bandana during one of his matches in the 1987 Championships.

Spain’s Rafael Nadal debuted in the Championships in 2005. During that season he wore a sleeveless T-shirt and capris. Although his outfit wasn’t on terms with the British formal dress code and customs, he wore the outfit in the following years as well.

Former Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova took a dig at the strict Wimbledon dress code when she wore white shorts and teamed it up with a tuxedo-style top during the 2008 edition. The American legend Serena Williams caught attention when she wore an all-white trench coat at the Championships in 2008, and sported a bandana and hoops.

Roger Federer was glittering in gold

During the 2008 edition, Roger Federer wore a blazer-like outfit and it was the first time a player donned such an outfit. In the following year, he sported a prematch jacket with gold and even his bag had a fair amount of gold on it. In 2013, he wore shoes that had bright orange on the soles. However, he was asked to wear another pair of shoes in the further rounds.

The Championships begin on Monday, the 28th of June onwards. Like every other year, during the fortnight, some of the memorable moments will occur and fans will be witnessing history when it event is over. It will be interesting to see who emerges on top.
