WWE SmackDown results, grades: Edge returns, sparks brawl with Roman Reigns and Jimmy Uso

SmackDown ended on a major bombshell as WWE Hall of Famer Edge made his return and sparked a brawl with Roman Reigns and Jimmy Uso.

The Rated R Superstar made his first appearance since losing to the Tribal Chief in the Triple Threat with Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37 in April, and he’s gunning for the Universal Title.

At the top of the show, Jimmy told Roman that his brother Jey wasn’t coming back to SmackDown, but vowed he could do everything his twin does for the champ.

The Head of the Table was sceptical, but urged his cousin to prove it tonight, with Paul Heyman later suggesting he should become Main Event Jimmy to help Reigns by winning a big match.

In the final bout of the night, he faced off with Dolph Ziggler – who had Robert Roode at ringside – in a fun clash, but sadly one not quite on the level of Jey’s main event appearances over the past year.

The most memorable moment was undoubtedly Dolph hitting the Zig-Zag onto the steel steps.

In the end, Jimmy won with a superkick, but Reigns didn’t seemed impressed as Heyman insisted he simply expects that.

The pair then made their way out of the championship celebration, with Roman’s cousin told to stay backstage.

Heyman hyped up his client’s dominance, listening everyone he’s beaten includng The Fiend, Cesaro, Kevin Owens, Braun Strowman, Edge, Daniel Bryan and Rey Mysterio.

He said it was time for a major announcement – but Metalingus rang out over the ThunderDome and Edge made his return, attacking Reigns and sparking a wild brawl.

He slammed the Universal Champion’s head into the announce table, got cut off with a Superman Punch but fired back with a spear and looked prime to his a con-chair-to before Jimmy made the save.

He had enough to fight off Uso too, hitting a spear and sending him through the barricade as he stood tall to end the show and presumably set up our title match for Money In The Bank.

Bayley and Seth Rollins win, Sami Zayn talk about zarma and Liv Morgan qualifies for Money In The Bank

While the main event provided something relatively new after Edge’s absence, the rest of SmackDown managed to be solid while suggesting plenty of long-running storylines are still going.

Bianca Belair celebrated her win over Bayley at Hell In A Cell before Seth Rollins chatted about his own victory against Cesaro, which led Bayley coming out, a brawl, and the Swiss Superman making the save.

This led into the already-announced mixed tag match, with Bayley able to pick up the win after Rollins bumped into the EST of WWE and stopped her hitting the KOD.

Rick Boogs brought out Shinsuke Nakamura – Kingsuke, that is – and crowned him the new King of SmackDown, while Baron Corbin sulked backstage and ranted about losing his crown.

Sonya Deville and Adam Pearce were enjoying Nak’s theme music, but Rollins interrupted and insisted he should be next in line to face Roman, and seemed very serious, with no hint of his usual delusions.

In a Money In The Bank qualifier, Apollo Crews and Big E fought yet again, delivering one of the best matches of their rivalry as the New Day man won after Commander Azeez was booted from ringside.

Backstage, Sami Zayn found out he was facing Kevin Owens in a Money In The Bank qualifier next week, as he insisted officials were playing with karma – and his mood didn’t improve when Pearce revealed it would be a Last Man Standing match.

Sticking with MITB, Sonya revealed Carmella was the first SmackDown entrance into the women’s ladder match, which left Liv Morgan unimpressed and wanted a change to get in herself.

She faced Carmella – whose spot was safe – and beat her foe, scoring a big win after doing the same last week.

It would be a big shock if the former Riott Squad member did win the coveted briefcase, but the reaction from the crowd – and a fresh face being elevated – would be an overwhelming positive.
