“He Should Recover from His Injuries”- Tyson Fury Advises Billy Joe Saunders to ‘Win Another World Title’

The former WBO 168 lbs titlist, Billy Joe Saunders, has hinted at retirement after suffering his maiden career loss to Canelo Alvarez on May 8. The 31-year-old suffered a brutal injury to his orbital bone in the fight. Hence, he will be out of action for a long time. However, his compatriot, Tyson Fury, feels that he should return.

Disagreeing with Billy Joe Saunders’s decision, Fury showed his full faith in the former champion and advised him to reclaim his lost throne. Meanwhile, Tyson Fury will put his undefeated record and the WBC title on the line against Deontay Wilder on July 24. Ahead of the fight, he spoke with SecondsOut to discuss a few things about Saunder’s career.

Tyson Fury said, “I have told him that he should recover from his injuries and come back and win another world title for sure and don’t go out like that. He [Billy Joe Saunders] has been in this game a long time. I believe Billy Joe needs to fight against for his own inner spirit.”

“He doesn’t do it for the money. Because he has made a lot of money as well and he is a very clever guy. He invests a lot of stuff out of boxing. So, he will never be broke, but again it’s more than that.”

As ‘Superb’ Saunders is undoubtedly one of the best super middleweight boxers, his return would carry a lot of worth. He can target another world title in the division thus getting a shot and avenging his defeat to Canelo Alvarez.

Can Billy Joe Saunders avoid Canelo Alvarez in the 168 lbs division?

As of now, Alvarez has three belts in the super middleweight roster. He is the WBC, WBA, WBO, and Ring titleholder. The Mexican superstar is now aiming for an undisputed clash against IBF champion Caleb Plant by the end of 2021. So, a rematch between Saunders and Alvarez doesn’t seem possible for 2021.

If Caleb Plant surprisingly beats Alvarez, he would grab all four super-middleweight belts. However, the chances appear bleak and Alvarez will be the favorite against ‘Sweethands’. Hence, if Saunders returns at super middleweight, it will possibly call for a re-match against Alvarez.

However, the division is full of big names who are looking for their shot at the gold. Hence, Saunders can opt for a non-title bout on his comeback and then resurrect himself in the championship journey. Furthermore, he could opt to move up and box for a belt in a third division.
