WATCH: George Russell’s Inspirational Message to Williams F1 After Styrian GP Heartbreak

George Russell qualified for the Styrian GP at P11, missing out for the Q3 by just the eighth thousandth of a second. Although he started the race at P10 thanks to Tuki Tsunoda’s three-place grid penalty for impeding Valtteri Bottas.

With his best start position for Williams, George Russell was heading into the race to secure his first-ever points for the Wantage-based team.

The young Brit had a solid start to the race and moved to P10 quickly after the Leclerc and Gasly incident at the start of the race. The 22-year-old was strong to hold his position and keep the likes of Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda at bay. And at one point he was even closing in on the two-time champion, Fernando Alonso.

However, because of reliability issues, Russell had to retire from the race after the 38th lap. And soon his team apologized to him over the radio: “Okay George, bad news our day’s done. Sorry mate.”

“It’s such a shame”: George Russell following his retirement.

“It’s such a shame. Racing is never easy. It’s never… fair is not the right word. You make your own luck, and ultimately, something went wrong today.” said George Russell.

“But for us, we’re not here consistently, and it’s just typical. I don’t really know what to think or to say to be honest. It’s such a shame for everybody in the team. They’ve worked so hard for this, and it’s been such a long time coming.”

This one hurt. Every single member of the team should hold their head high today. We were up there on merit. Racing can be brutal but we keep fighting.

“These points today would have been massive, not just for the morale, but if I finished P8 or P7 – I think P7 was probably possible, I was quicker than Alonso – four or six points in the constructors’ would have been massive. Absolutely massive for us.”

Although Russell has secured his first points in F1 with Mercedes when he replaced Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix who had tested positive for the coronavirus. The young Brit finished the race P9, earning his first three points of Drivers Championship, two for the ninth place and one for the fastest lap.
