Love Island 2021 fans unhappy as texts replaced by voice notes: ‘This feels blasphemous’

Love Island 2021 kicked off this evening with a host of new stars taking to the villa – and they weren’t the only new things to look out for as the series got under way.
There was one big change to the format which left some fans confused (and plenty unhappy), with voice notes replacing texts in the opening episode.
Ever since the show relaunched in 2015, ‘I got a text’ has been one of the most famous quotes from the series, with text alerts signalling the latest bombshell coming the way of the viewer.
Things were different on Monday night, though, when the Love Islanders were nicely coupled up after meeting Laura Whitmore for the first time.
Toby Aromolaran then received a voice note letting the boys know that Chloe Burrows was making her way into the villa to break up one of the couples.
It was the first moment of real drama to kick off the series, but fans weren’t happy that texts had been replaced.
‘I would like to have a word with the person who thought replacing text messages with voice notes was a good idea,’ one fan wrote.
Another said: ‘Nooooo if they make “I’ve got a voice note” a thing I’m out.’
Will voice notes replace texts throughout the entire series? We’ll have to wait to find out.
More: Love Island
The islanders headed into the Spanish villa for the first time since the 2020 summer season was cancelled due to the pandemic on Monday – and it’s safe to say people were glad to have it back.
The upcoming season has made history with Hugo Hammond becoming the first-ever disabled contestant to appear on the dating show after bosses said the programme will feature its most diverse line-up yet.
Love Island begins tonight at 9pm on ITV2
