UPSET!! No.19 Seed Jannik Sinner Stunned by Marton Fucsovics at Wimbledon Championships 2021 R1

The opening-round jitters at Wimbledon Championships continue to haunt top players on both men’s and women’s singles draw this year. With Stefanos Tsitsipas and Petra Kvitova already bowing out in the first round, young Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner lost his opening round match against a tough opponent Marton Fucsovics in four sets.

The next-gen player got the better of the Hungarian in the first set, 7-5. Since the end of that set, Sinner dropped his level as Fucsocivs turned this to his advantage.

Both players were moderate in their first-serve percentages. While the Italian relied on rallies to fetch him points, Fucsovics used his variety to good effect and won the next two sets, 6-3,7-5.

With the momentum clearly in the hands of Fucsovics, Sinner couldn’t do much in the fourth set after giving away his service game initially. However, the Italian made sure not to give up on the match and fought hard on the return games.

But, the Hungarian was able to survive the scare of Sinner and used all his experience to battle past the teenager. At one moment, it looked as if Sinner would bounce back at one return game or the other in the fourth set.

Finally, serving for the match at 5-3, the resilience of Sinner took the game to deuce. The Hungarian ensured to not make any blunders from his serve and forced errors out of the Italian by making him play a few long rallies.

In the end, Sinner gave up and lost a hard-fought match against Marton Fucsovics, 5-7,6-3,7-5,6-3 in 2hours and 45 minutes. The Hungarian will now face Jiri Vesely in the second round at SW19.

Before Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner played at the Queen’s Club Championships and lost in the opening round to Jack Draper. While it’s a known fact that the Italian prefers clay to grass, the list of youngsters who were in trouble on day one at Wimbledon shows how difficult it is to play on a grass-court.

These defeats by the next-gen ATP players were also a testament to the legacy of Big-3(Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic) and how easy they appeared to have made the transition from one surface to the other.
