WATCH: Serena Williams Practices With Good Friend Grigor Dimitrov Before Wimbledon Championships 2021 Opener

World No. 21, Grigor Dimitrov, has been practicing with Serena Williams ahead of the Wimbledon Championships 2021. The Bulgarian is yet to win a title this year and has an 11-9 win-loss record in 2021. Grigor is hitting the courts at practice sessions with Serena, who is struggling for form as well.

Serena Williams, World No. 8, has been on a bad run this year and has won zero titles in 2021. Grigor, who is the No. 18 seed at SW19 this year, will be playing his first-round match on Tuesday, against Fernando Verdasco of Spain. It should be an easy first-round match for the Bulgarian.

Grigor Dimitrov and his 2021 run

Grigor has not had a good run in 2021, especially after an 11-9 win-loss record, and the player has also been injured for a long time. Grigor picked up a back injury during his Australian Open quarterfinal match against Aslan Karatsev. He started the game very well, winning the first set as well but picked up the injury after that. In his post-match interview, he said that the pain was so bad that he could not put on his socks. The Bulgarian player eventually crashed out in four sets.

Then at the Roland Garros this year, Grigor pulled out due to his injuries. The back problems were the cause of his retirement from the first-round match against Marcos Giron. He was leading in this game as well, winning the first two sets against the American. However, his injury got the better of him, and he retired during the fourth set.

Things have not looked good for the Bulgarian this year, especially on clay court. With the Wimbledon Championships beginning, and his poor run in Grand Slams this year, he will need to prove his worth in a different way. The Bulgarian has won only one title on a grass court, and this week will be a test of his character.

What’s next for Grigor?

The Bulgarian needs to focus on his next challenge, the Wimbledon Championships. The Tokyo Olympics and the US Open loom over his head this year; however, he should take things one step at a time. The injury might aggravate during the matches, and perhaps, he should opt for surgery.

Due to certain surprise withdrawals, the Bulgarian might be able to pull off a few upsets this year in the grass-court tournament. With the likes of Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem withdrawing from Wimbledon, he has a chance of reaching the semifinals at SW19. He will be playing his first-round match on Tuesday.
