While Olivia Rodrigo may have had Courtney Love calling her out, she has Elvis Costello in her corner amid ‘plagiarism’ claims.
The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star has caused one heck of a tizz with her debut album Sour, which has topped all the charts and spawned some absolute tunes including Driver’s License and Good 4 U.
However, in releasing her tunes, some have found similiarities between Brutal and Elvis’s 1978 tune Pump It Up.
While some have called bloody plagiarism on the intro, Elvis has no issues with the tune having a similar riff to his classic.
The 66-year-old post-punk singer-songwriter was himself heavily inspired by Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues when writing the satirical track, and he insisted lifting elements from other artists’ work and making it your own is ‘how rock and roll works’.
A Twitter user re-tweeted a link to an article about Olivia being accused of plagiarism by Courtney Love and added: ‘No s***. First song on the album is a pretty much direct lift from Elvis Costello.’
To which Costello revealed he had no beef whatsoever: ‘This is fine by me, Billy.
‘It’s how rock and roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That’s what I did subterreaneanhomesickblues #toomuchmonkeybusiness.’
Hole frontwoman Courtney was criticised when she recently called out the Good 4 U hitmaker for copying the rock band’s artwork for their 1994 album Live Through This for her recent Sour Prom Concert film promo.

Courtney captioned the snap of the Deja Vu star: ‘Spot the difference! #twinning! @oliviarodrigo.’
She went on in the comments: ‘It was rude of her, and Geffen not to ask myself or Ellen Von Unwerth. It’s happened my whole career so i.d.c [I don’t care]. But manners is manners.
‘Stealing an original idea and not asking permission is rude. There’s no way to be elegant about it. I’m not angry. It happens all the time to me.
‘And he really I’m very gracious or say nothing. But this was bad form. That’s not bullying or bomb throwing. This persons music has nothing to do with my life. Possibly never will. It was rude and I gave every right to stick up for my work…[sic]’
Olivia commented on the post and showed her appreciation for the inspiration, writing: ‘love u and live through this sooooo much (sic)’

The Hole star then quipped that she is waiting for an apology and flowers from Olivia, adding: ‘@oliviarodrigo Olivia – you’re welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! Dm me for deets! I look forward to reading your note.’
