More than 20million fans tuned in to watch England’s 2-0 victory over Germany at Euro 2020, it has been confirmed.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane at Wembley stadium last night secured the national team a spot in the quarter-finals, where they will take on Ukraine.

BBC bosses announced the viewing figures today, confirming that they peaked at 20.6million, boasting a TV audience share of 80.1%.

As well as this, the tense match broke iPlayer records, with 5.6m live streams across the UK – becoming the most watched Euro 2020 event so far.

Those BBC numbers are set to rise with the channel hosting England’s quarter-final tie against Ukraine on Saturday, as well as Belgium v Italy on Friday.

It was an emotional night for all involved as Kane fought tears after the victory, after hearing the crowd belt out Sweet Caroline across the ground.

‘An amazing, amazing day, amazing game. The performance was top drawer, another clean sheet but we go again as we ain’t done nothing yet.

‘We enjoy it but we’ve got another big game on Saturday and let’s get ready for that.’

A string of famous faces were also celebrating the win, as David Beckham and Ed Sheeran watched the game from the stands, beside Prince William, Kate Middleton, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

‘And we beat the Germans. What a day to be an England football fan. Fabulous.’
