Dr Hilary Jones furiously slammed conspiracy theorists in the wake of footage of an anti-lockdown mob stood outside Professor Chris Whitty’s home.

Wednesday’s episode of Good Morning Britain discussed whether Professor Whitty should be provided with protection to prevent similar things happening again.

Susanna Reid asked Dr Hilary to weigh in, and he launched into a passionate speech about the abuse health workers have faced during the pandemic.

He said: ‘This is widespread. This is people who work in hospitals getting their cars pelted as they go into work to look after Covid patients because some of these idiots don’t believe that Covid-19 exists.

‘They have these mad illusions that it’s all some sort of conspiracy.

‘They hound people, the police get it, paramedics get it all the time, we dismiss it as schoolboy behaviour – schoolboys don’t behave like this.’

The medical professional added: ‘So many assaults go unreported because the people who care about our population, they’re not the kind of people who want to take it further, but for everybody else it doesn’t send the right signals out.

‘If [Whitty] had fought back his career would be on the line, there would be a court case, and who knows, he might lose that role.’

Host Martin Lewis argued that Professor Whitty might need to take a stronger stance in future.

‘Perhaps Chris Whitty does need to say, “I will prosecute, not for myself but because I have a responsibility”,’ he said.

In yesterday’s episode Martin recalled a similar terrifying incident of being harassed in the street when he declined to speak to a stranger while out with his young daughter.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
