Loki episode 4: Fans horrified by romance story hints: ‘It physically makes me want to gag’

Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 4 of Loki.

In episode 4 of Loki on Disney Plus, a potential romance storyline is introduced that has horrified Marvel fans, with some describing it as ‘weird’ and ‘forced’.

In the latest instalment of the Marvel series, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Loki variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) are captured by the TVA (Time Variance Authority) after facing impending doom during an apocalypse on the planet Lamentis-1 in the year 2077.

Before the TVA show up, Loki and Sylvie share a heartfelt moment, where they appear to accept that the end is nigh.

Sylvie touches Loki’s arm, which causes a nexus event (a breach in the timeline), which is unlike any that the TVA has ever seen before.

This nexus event is what alerts the organisation to their location, with TVA agent Mobius M Mobius (Owen Wilson) then mocking Loki about his relationship with Sylvie during the God of Mischief’s interrogation.

The pair briefly opened up about their love lives (Picture: Marvel Studios/Disney Plus)

Mobius implies that Loki has romantic feelings towards Sylvie, describing their connection as a ‘sick, twisted, romantic relationship’ and Loki as an ‘incredible seismic narcissist’.

While Loki denies having romantic feelings towards Sylvie, at the end of the episode, just before Loki is ‘pruned’ by Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Loki turns to Sylvie, telling her that ‘this is new for me’, before placing his hands on her shoulders.

Considering Loki was revealed to be alive in the mid-credits scene, this could imply that a Loki and Sylvie romance is on the cards, despite this meaning that Loki would have basically fallen for another version of himself.

Numerous viewers voiced their horror over the idea, with one saying they thought it would be ‘super weird’ for them to go through with it.

‘I cannot take this romance it physically makes me want to gag like WTF CAN THEY JUST BE FRIENDS,’ one person tweeted.

i think the most frustrating part is that using sylvie as a metaphor for loki learning to love himself is a great idea and could totally work but marvel had to go and imply romance???? for no reason????? why can’t they be like siblings? im just. 🥴

‘The forced romance between Sylvie and Loki felt out of place and unnecessary,’ someone else wrote.

‘The episode was really good, but I do not like the romance angle they’re going for in Loki. I read them more as siblings. Uh yeah…’ another remarked.

Several fans pointed out that they saw Loki and Sylvie as having more of a brother and sister bond, which could still turn out to be true.

We’ll just have to see if a romance between Loki and variant Loki is actually something that the MCU has cooked up.

During a recent interview, director Kate Herron addressed the possibility of a Loki and Sylvie romance, saying that while their relationship isn’t ‘necessarily romantic’, up to the point of episode three, ‘we don’t know’.

The pair opened up about their love lives in the previous episode, with Loki being confirmed as bisexual and Sylvie touching upon her long-distance relationship.

The latest episode of Loki ended with an intriguing mid-credits scene, as Loki woke up in a wasteland opposite a group of new characters, including Richard E Grant dressed in Loki’s classic Marvel comics costume.

Will Loki end up leading a team of variants to take down the TVA? And will he be reunited with Sylvie in the process?

Loki returns on Wednesday and is available to watch on Disney Plus.
