Madonna causes quite the ruckus by comparing Britney Spears same-sex kiss to Lil Nas X’s powerful BET Awards moment

Safe to say Madonna knows how to cause a ruckus after she put it out there that she ‘did it first’ in regards to the award show same-sex kiss.

Lil Nas X gave us absolute life on Sunday when he kissed one of his backing dancers after performing Montero (Call Me By Your Name) on the BET Awards stage.

The stirring moment went down with the audience who broke out into cheers while fans also heaped praise on the moment on social media and the strides the rapper has made for gay visibility.

Even hip hop mogul Diddy was on board as he tweeted: ‘Lil Nas X did that!! Be fearless!!!’

To Madonna, though, she believes such a historic crown belongs to her and she wasn’t afraid to make it clear.

Reminiscing about her iconic – infamous? – kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV VMAs in 2003, she shared a side by side shot of her smooch as well as that of Lil Nas X’s.

She simply wrote: ‘#Diditfirst.’

While we can’t be sure whether she was simply sharing the hot take in a light-hearted manner – because, yes, technically, we suppose, she did share a same-sex awards show kiss first – and isn’t truly comparing her kiss with, arguably, the two biggest pop stars of the time to a homosexual man making a poignant statement on sexuality, fans have…well, they’ve reacted.

To many, despite Madonna being open about her sexuality as well as being seen as an LGBT+ ally and icon, there is no comparison.

Pia Glenn wrote on Twitter: ‘Not mad at the mirrored images themselves, but I guess it’d never occur to her or her team to have some grace and go for a “love to see the next generations living out loud” or something, since he is a gay man kissing a man vs. her w/a younger pop star in a bid to stay relevant.’

‘What Lil Nas X did is a major moment & should be congratulated and praised, since he is actually gay, out and proud of it, as he should be,’ another mused. ‘There is a lot of homophobia in the industry and for him to kiss another man on national awards show is a big, brave deal.’

Madonna should be using her platform to speak about Britney’s situation but all she’s concerned about is shading an openly queer black man who done a groundbreaking thing? who cares about who did it first? someone do Madge a favour and take her phone off her please x

Oldies like Courtney love and Madonna calling out young artists for doing fun and cool stuff with their art by saying “I did it first” is so telling of how outdated they are and it’s sad to see.

Dont care who u are, u automatically loose cool points when u get jealous of a 18yo

Let us not disrespect Madonna but give her credit where it’s due. She did do it first and took plenty of shade for it. Nas is grand but don’t play wit Madonna do ya research and keep it pushin. https://t.co/lKcdyKbfV5

While not minimising Madonna’s efforts for the community, another wrote: ‘So, snaps to Madonna for bringing attention to the Aids crisis in the 80s and giving us Pride bops, but what Lil Nas X has been doing these past 4 months is more than Madonna’s ever contributed to improving visibility for gay men—especially fem gay men. So, that’s that on that.’

Be that as it may, Madonna most definitely had her supporters who were keen to make sure her efforts for the LGBT+ community were heard, as one defended: ‘She deserves credit — people pretend it was no big thing, but it was a risk and had she not been so eager to do provocative things she’d actually be much more popular than she even is. But she should also see the clear difference here. Comes off as petty.’

Madonna fans also supported the idea she was being irreverent in her support, as one wrote: ‘She was just being funny and supportive in her own way on her Instagram Stories… it wasn’t an official post on her Instagram or Twitter account that had any negative intent towards him. LOL. Madonna loves and adores Lil Nas X’

‘Ain’t nothing wrong with Lil Nas X kiss at all. In drawing parallels to his and others let’s not selectively forget and act like Madonna’s and Britney’s kiss wasn’t also stirring up a HUGE amount of dialogue at the time as well tho,’ one wrote. ‘We didn’t just see it and move on the next day.’

Lil Nas X – real name Montero Hill – was widely praised for the kiss however he later revealed he also received a slew of homophobic abuse.

Taking to Twitter, the 22-year-old wrote: ‘We are 4 months in and people are still acting surprised that I am being gay and sexual in performances of a song about gay and sexual s**t.’

Later quoting the tweet, he added: ‘Like the song is literally about gay sex what y’all want me to do play the piano while baking a cake?’
