“It’s Not Coming Home!”: Mazepin Trolls England Ahead of Euro 2020 QFs

While the Formula One season rolls on, it seems football fever is gripping the paddock. With Euro 2020 ongoing across various cities in Europe, various F1 drivers took to social media to show their support.

One of those drivers was Hass F1 Team’s Nikita Mazepin. Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, the Russian revealed the one team he hopes doesn’t win Europe’s biggest football tournament.

Nikita Mazepin admits he doesn’t want England to win Euro 2020

The Russian is competing in his debut season with Haas in F1. Despite showing flashes of pace, Mazepin remains one of four drivers yet to score a point this season. Recently, the 22-year-old took part in an ongoing trend in the paddock.

While F1 travels around Europe at the moment, another tournament that is doing the same is Euro 2020. The European football tournament kicked off on June 11, and is now in the knockout stages. With 14 European drivers on the current F1 grid, it was a matter of time before they got involved with the tournament on social media.

Amidst all this, Mazepin saw his home country Russia knocked out of the tournament in the group stages itself. However, he admitted to F1 journalist Chris Medland that he hopes England’s ‘It’s coming home’ chants don’t turn out to be true.

He said, “Everyone around me keeps telling me it’s coming home, so I’m really hoping it’s not coming home!”

In addition, the Russian also revealed he supports Ukraine since he has lots of friends from there. With Ukraine taking on England in the quarterfinals, fans now know whose side Mazepin is on!

Can Mazepin upset the odds at the Austrian Grand Prix?

While the Russian is yet to score points this season, he isn’t last in the driver’s championship. That unwanted statistic belongs to Williams’ Nicholas Latifi. However, Haas‘ pace this season is arguably the worst among the grid, which may continue Mazepin’s struggles this weekend.

In addition, the Russian is yet to make it out of Q1 this season, which his teammate Mick Schumacher did in the French Grand Prix. However, F1 continues to own the element of surprise as seen with George Russell last weekend in P8 before he was forced to retire.

Could Mazepin finish ahead of his teammate along with a few others on July 4? Only time will tell.
