Considered the favourite from the outset, Danish comedy drama Another Round scooped the Academy Award for best international feature film at this year’s Oscars.
Its win was a poignant moment for director Thomas Vinterberg, whose 19-year-old daughter Ida had died in a car crash just four days into the shoot for the film and to whom he dedicated his win in an emotional speech.
The 52-year-old Dane, who was also nominated for best director at the 2021 Oscars, has previously garnered critical acclaim with films including The Celebration, 2015’s Far from the Madding Crowd and The Hunt, which was also Oscar-nominated for best foreign film as well as claiming the Palme D’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
The Hunt also starred Mads Mikkelsen, who takes the lead role in Another Round, and is one of Hollywood’s most popular villains after his turns as Bond baddie Le Chiffre in Casino Royale and Hannibal Lecter in Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal TV series.
With his upcoming take on Grindelwald for the third Fantastic Beasts film, a role Mads inherited from Johnny Depp, Another Round marks a very different sort of role for the 55-year-old.
What’s Another Round about?
Another Round follows four middle-aged high school teachers, who feel stuck in their lives, as they follow an experiment to consume alcohol on a daily basis to see how it affects their social and professional lives.
The friends are not seeking to drink away their worries, but rather test a Norwegian theory that they will improve their lives by maintaining a constant level of alcohol in their blood.
With a mix of comedy and drama, the film offers a realistic, humorous and often heart-warming look at male friendship as each participant looks to gain happiness from their secret research.

Mads Mikkelsen is joined in the cast by Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe.
The film has already been earmarked for a US remake, with rumours of Leonardo DiCaprio being attached to the project.
How to watch Another Round
Like many films over the past year, Another Round’s release was complicated by the pandemic.
Although shown at 2020’s BFI London Film Festival, its UK release was delayed until this summer.
The film became available to rent on platforms including Amazon Prime Video and iTunes in the US earlier this year, but is yet to appear on any UK streaming platform.
