The director of Loki has revealed that the God of Mischief’s bisexuality won’t be explored further in the Marvel series, as several fans shut down claims that the show is ‘queerbaiting’.
In episode three of Loki, the titular character (Tom Hiddleston) is confirmed as bisexual during a heart-to-heart with the Loki variant, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino).
Director Kate Herron tweeted about how ‘important’ it was to her to acknowledge Loki’s sexual orientation in the MCU, writing: ‘It is a part of who he is and who I am too. I know this is a small step but I’m happy, and heart is so full, to say that this is now Canon in #mcu #Loki.’
Numerous fans expressed their excitement over the exchange, with one saying that it was the ‘best day’ of their life.
However, during a recent interview, Kate explained that Loki being bisexual won’t be explored further in the narrative.
Speaking to ET, Kate said that she wanted to ensure that it didn’t feel as though ‘we were just wedging something in’ when Loki and Sylvie were talking about matters of the heart.

‘This episode is really beautiful for me, because it’s these two characters getting to know each other, so in that sense, it felt like the right place for that conversation to happen. And I thought it was done really beautifully by the writers,’ she said.
When asked whether there will be any further exploration in the series of ‘what it means for Loki to be bisexual’, Kate responded: ‘I’m trying to think how to answer your question.’
‘I would say in our story, this is how we acknowledge it. But I hope that that paves the way for deeper exploration,’ she added.
In episode four of Loki, it was implied that there could be a romantic link between Loki and Sylvie, despite them being different versions of the same character.
Several Loki fans shared their horror over the idea of Loki and Sylvie getting together, as it would be an example of selfcest.
While many fans don’t like the idea of a Loki and Sylvie romance, they also pointed out that Loki being with a woman wouldn’t ‘erase’ his bisexuality (Picture: Marvel Studios/Disney Plus)
Putting aside the fact that Sylvie is another version of Loki, several viewers shut down claims that the series is ‘queerbaiting’ by having Loki potentially become romantically involved with a woman after revealing that he is bisexual.
They pointed out that Loki’s bisexuality means that he could be romantically linked with people of different genders, and so being with a woman would not ‘erase his sexuality’.
‘Two things about #Loki. It is not and will never be queerbaiting, Loki is confirmed bi and even if he’d end up with a woman it would NEVER erase his sexuality. I’m a bi woman and I’m married to a man, does it make me straight? Nope,’ one person tweeted.
‘#Loki is Bi. Don’t invalidate bisexuals whenever they don’t fit arbitrary “gay enough” standards. I see many calls to “make him gay/homosexual/openly queer” AS IF THAT’S NOT ERASING BISEXUALITY. And stop calling Bi rep queerbaiting!’ another said.
Someone else remarked: ‘All weirdness about Loki and Sylvie aside if I see one more person complain he’s “not queer enough” cause he might be interested in a woman the biphobia SMELLS.’

Another fan said that as much as they ‘dislike the Loki and Sylvie ship’, they would not abide by ‘any biphobic arguments’.
‘Loki is bisexual, he CAN be attracted to the opposite gender, if he ended up with a gf instead of a bf it would be fine,he would still be bi. NO BIPHOBIA HERE,’ they stated.
Loki returns on Wednesday and is available to watch on Disney Plus.
