“He’s My Hero”: Denis Shapovalov’s Kind Words for Idol Andy Murray After Wimbledon Championship 2021 Victory
Canadian International, Denis Shapovalov, caused one of the biggest upsets last night, knocking out the former champion, Andy Murray. As the two met in the third round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, the world tuned in with uncontainable excitement. The crowd was entertained and shocked as Shapovalov dominated the game against the British legend on his home turf.
With an impeccable display of tennis, the Canadian beat Andy in straight sets, one brilliant return at a time. However, after breaking the hearts of many England fans, Shapovalov’s post-match presentation might have just made him Britain’s new favourite.
Setting aside the fierce battle fought, Denis was all praise for his opponent, calling him ‘My Hero’.

Earlier, Denis had expressed his admiration for the former World No. 1, claiming to be a fan who watched him playing, growing up. However, if playing against his hero wasn’t enough, beating him on the centre court surely might have done it.
As the two embraced each other at the end of the game, the crowd stood on their feet, applauding the effort they witnessed from both. In a moment best described wholesome, an overwhelmed Denis made his move to the mic, while Andy exited the court.

In spite of having just played one of the most historic matches of his life, Denis made his post-match interview a lot more about his opponent than him.
In a true class act, Denis credited Andy Murray on his return to the game, saying, “Coming back from an injury like that and to be playing the tennis that he is playing, moving like that, like I said in the second match, it was truly vintage Andy, it was so much fun to watch as a fan”.

The Canadian’s display of maturity and selflessness was welcomed by an uproar from the crowd. The audience, that pushed a tired Andy until his last point, now cheered on the youngster, giving him the respect he rightly earned.
Shapovalov becomes a big-game player
Beating Andy Murray in the way he did has brought the world’s attention to Denis Shapovalov. As he now progresses into the round of 16, he takes on the Spanish International, Roberto Bautista Agut.
The crowd who once cheered every point against him will now be backing every swing that comes off his racquet.
